Updates from the 5th reunion in 1968

Picture
At our 5th reunion many of us submitted a brief biography of our first five years out of high  school. They were mimeographed and printed in a small booklet held together by brass brads. I found mine and am posting them as I have time to type them. Some of the pages are faded and hard to read so please excuse the typos. The  locations listed for each person is where they lived in 1968.

 Ray  Ruppert

The 1968 reunion booklet was dedicated to the memory of Bill Brand:
The following letter was sent to Bill's mother by his C.O.

It is with greatest bereavement that I find myself writing this letter at a time when sorrow is deep within your heart, but the feeling of myself and all men of "A" Company must be expressed.

While on operation "Paul Revere," the platoon to which your son was assigned came under heavy enemy fire, one of his fellow soldiers was wounded by a sniper. William went to the aid of his comrade and was shot, 23 October  1966 by a hidden sniper. William died instantly suffering no pain. Your son was a fine man and a dedicated soldier. His devotion to duty and country were and still are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

Specialist Four Brand was a man whose memory will live in the hearts of those who knew him, a constant reminder of the sacrifice that a true America will make so that not only his family but all of the families of the world may live in peace.

You are not alone in your sorrow as each of us in "A" Company share some of this sorrow with you. With deepest sympathy we offer our condolences.

Sincerely yours,
Ora L. Boss

Year one: Harv and I, as most will remember, completed our plans and explored the U.S. and Europe quite thoroughly and satisfied our traveling spirits for awhile anyway. Year Two: I started college at Brigham Young
University a school of 20,000 +. This was one of my most satisfying years – I led the Frosh baseball team in batting with a 374 batting average, was appointed to BYU Senate, and compiled a 3.39 GPA. Year three: My soph. year was also a rewarding year, I was selected asst. editor to the “WYE” Magazine, a national publication. This gave me valuable experience in my minor – Communications and Publications. Over Christmas break, I spent two weeks touring Mexico. Year four: in my Junior year, I was chosen the top student in my field – Physical Education
– I was selected All-Conference second baseman and raised my grade point to a 3.72. Year five: I was selected Senior of the Month in October. Was selected on the All-Conference Ski Team. I was caught cheating on a religion exam and expelled from school.

Hal Wayne Worthen
Mrs. Sandy Worthen (Reed)

APO San Francisco

We’ve had a terrific five years. I’m not sure what you would like for your newsletter, but will fill you in on what these two “Jacks” have been doing and you can glean from it what you like.

Wayne went into the Air Force in July 1963 and Sandy went to Kelsey-Baird in Spokane after which she went to work for a lumber brokerage. Upon completion of basic training, Wayne was station at Glasgow, Montana and in July 1964 we were married.

Following a honeymoon in Canada, we settled down in Glasgow and Sandy went to work as a secretary for the bank. In the rugged country we soon became avid hunters and fishermen. Our freezer was full of deer and game birds and 35 degree below zero found us ice fishing through 16 inches of ice.

In September, 1965, Wayne cross-trained from an electrical unit to a photo reconnaissance squadron. During his training period, we lived first in Denver, Colorado, then Tucson, Arizona and then settled down in Perris, California. Wayne was stationed at March Air Force Base, and Sandy worked as Platform Secretary in the Perris Bank.

Wayne received orders for Vietnam in August, 1966 where he served in the photo reconnaissance squadron at Ran Son Nhut Air Base. Sandy went home to Spokane to work at Washington Water Power until Wayne returned in July 1967 and received his honorable discharge.

We had done so much traveling it was hard to settle down so in November we decided to store our things and travel around the world. Our first stop was Alaska after which we stayed in Japan then Manila and now e are living in Saigon, Vietnam were we hope to earn enough to finance the rest of our way.

Saigon has been quite an experience especially with the recent developments. So far our trip has been wonderful and we’ve taken our time to enjoy each stop. By the way, if any of our classmates or their friends are over here and get to Saigon, our street address is: 39/4 Soung Nguyet Anh. We’ve met several old friends over here, and would love to get together with anyone else who is over here.

Actually, hope that none of you are here to fight or will have to come to fight and I hope that as special mention will be made of any classmates who did have to come over here and never got back.

Our hopes are that it will be a great success and w will look forward to the ten-year reunion. We hope to see you all in 1973 as by then we should be less nomadic and able to make a trip home.
